BritSoc vs CC Kikkers International Cricket
Brit Soc enjoy moral victory in the annual cricket game against C.C. de Kikkers.
Club raffle for 2 tickets to Monday night’s Rolling Stones concert in Amsterdam Arena was also a big hit.
Hoofddorp, Sunday 30 July 2006 – On a cool afternoon a quality game of cricket was cut short by the afternoon rain. Although the game was not played out in full the Brit Soc team can claim the high moral ground after scoring 200 runs for 9 in their allotted 30 overs and then having the two top Kikkers batsmen back in the pavilion after 2 overs for 5 runs. Afterwards a very successful BBQ (Braai) was held as the clouds lifted and a great summer evening social event unfolded.
The British Society of Amsterdam cricket team demonstrated some attractive batting after being put into bat by Kikkers skipper Andy Baird. Alexander Earl (44 runs) and Greg Cherry (29 runs) put on 52 runs for the first wicket and nearly 10 runs an over. Grant Holton (22 runs) joined Alex in moving the score to 97. Captain Ben Stothert added 24 runs and the middle order kept the scoreboard ticking over at a good run rate. Andy Baird had some success with the ball taking 3 wickets for 27 while Bony Singh was as economical as normal with 1 for 12 in his 5 overs.
Shailesh Kushwaha and Aussie Damien Stevens with 2 swashbuckling 6’s kept up the tempo and veteran UVA financier Alan Hodgson showed he had lost none of his Aussie cricket experience with a few flowing cover drives towards the end of the innings. The fact that Alan and Rob Fenwick had biked all the way from Amsterdam to Hoofddorp did not affect their performance. Rob needed to be reminded at the break that he was only on as a replacement fielder and should have let a few balls through to the boundary instead of going for run outs and fielding with such enthusiasm for the enemy. Peter Mansell and Taylor Holton finished off the final over as the score reached a respectable 200.
The teams then returned to the clubhouse for a traditional cricket tea with sandwiches, watermelon and salads.
Batting Stats: Alexander Earl (44), Greg Cherry (29), Grant Holton (22), Ben Stothert (24), Ramkey Ananthakrishnan (2), Shailesh Kushwaha (10 retired), Damien Stevens (17) Alan Hodgson (17), Peter Mansell (0 not out), Taylor Holton (0), and Rob Fenwick (D.N.B).
Bowling Stats: Zafar Sohail (1 for 20 off 5 overs), Chewie Tavandran (1-41 in 5), Andy Baird (3 wickets for 27), Bony Singh (1 for 12 in 5 overs), Sameer Jadhav, Peter Brugman & Crispin Foster bowled without success.
After Tea it was time for the Kikkers batsmen to take on the mammoth 200 runs in their 30 overs. But the weather had other ideas and very soon rain was pouring down. Paceman Damien Stevens was economical as well as demonstrating his Brett Lee pace in his first over for one run and then Greg Cherry took the two important wickets of Skipper Andy Baird after a fine catch by Ramkey Ananthakrishnan over his shoulder in the dark and wet conditions and dangerous batsman Zafar Sohail. Zafar Sohail attempted to fish outside the off stump and a fine diving catch by wicket keeper Ben Stothert ensued. The batsmen took the bad light on offer and rain stopped play.
After 30 minutes and a few beers/glasses of wine later the BBQ fire was started and it was agreed by all that no more cricket would be played today.
The emphasis was always on good social cricket, drinking, laughs and a BBQ to end the evening.
Prizes: Leo Hoogvoorst the honorary guest for the day presented the Leo Hoogvoorst Cup to Brit Soc skipper Ben Stothert for his side moral victory although technically it was a draw. This trophy will remain at the C.C. de Kikkers clubhouse and be fought again next year.
Batting Prize: Alex Earl for his 44 runs
Bowling Prize: Andy Baird 3-29 in 5 overs
Fielding Prize: Ramkey Ananthakrishnan
Special mention to Crispin Foster for the design of the prizes on the wine bottles, worth a prize itself. Please check out the foto’s.
Club Raffle: Andy Baird won the 2 tickets to Rolling Stones concert at Amsterdam Arena (our thanks to Koos Barnhoorn for donating these for a good cause).
To conclude a quote from the Brit Soc Captain: “Another great match between Kikkers and Britsoc. Despite the weather! Thanks to everyone who came, the fabulous trophy and prizes donated by the Kikkers, and the superb BBQ, lots of marinated chicken sosaties, Indian vegetarian bean curry with Roti, and fine wines. Special thanks to Cecile, Sandra, Grant and Pauline! The Stones Tickets from Koos and not forgetting the “Barmy Army”...for their support, and everyone else too many too mention. See you all next year Ben.”
