Social Activities
Bridge Night

We gather each week for a night of social bridge, which is usually more social with every bottle of wine consumed as the night goes on! If you want serious cut-throat bridge you will NOT find it here, but if you want a fun game at a pretty good standard in relaxed and friendly company do come and join us.
Please let us know via email or on phone every Tuesday at the latest, if you will be coming along. Bring a bottle and some nibbles.
BritSoc Social Fridays

The chance to unwind after a busy week at the office with other BritSoc members – is held once a month in one of the many great cafés, pubs and bars in Amsterdam. When the weather is good we get some tables on the outside terrace to enjoy rare Amsterdam sun. See upcoming events for pub venue and contact details.
Britsoc Girl Talk

Would you like to get out and make new friends? If so, please come and join us for a drink at Smits Koffehuis on the terrace, or in bad weather inside. We meet on the second Monday of each month from 7 pm onwards. We are a friendly group and old and new arrivals here are very welcome, so come along, or get in touch with me, Lorna Payne
Cinema Club

Escape from the reality for an evening by visiting the cinema. The film will be decided once the week’s schedule is out. Please email your details each month before the date to know where and when.
Knit Club

Knitting is hot why? Stress relief, creative outlet, tactile pleasure, meditation and a sense of accomplishment. There’s a tightly knit BritSoc group that will keep new members in stitches – the first ever BritSoc knitting club. Come join our loosely woven group of beginning and advanced knitters as we learn and help each other in the vast worldly knowledge of yarn. Please bring your own projects and supplies.
Monthly Book Club

If you fancy a good read followed by a lively debate and are happy occasionally to host a Book Club evening, then e-mail Maggie to find out more details.
Play Reading

From Dad’s Army scripts to poetry and monologues, the play reading group provides a sociable way to explore written works. Members take it in turns to host the evening at home. The host chooses the play, does the casting and provides some munchies for the interval. We always have a good night and would welcome any new members interested in play reading. We also organise occasional theatre trips.
Read Me a Story

We will choose just a few simple stories for the children to listen and sing to and the session will last only ½ hour. The story reading will be suitable for both Dutch and English children.
Scottish Country Dancing

Every Thursday evening during term time, a small group of us gather at the British School for Scottish country dancing. It’s sometimes elegant; it’s often very lively; and it’s always lots of fun. Danced to the distinctive Scottish jig, reel and strathspey music, it’s good exercise, whether for your legs or your smile. Most of all, it’s social dancing, and it’s a great way to meet people. Because it’s done in a set with a partner, everyone dances with everyone else. So, if you are on your own – don’t worry, – there are always people waiting to dance with you. You don’t need to wear a kilt. All you need are a pair of soft and flexible shoes (ballet or jazz type) not trainers and you will be ready for the off. Cost is also a plus point. It’s a bargain at €2.50 a session. What could be more of an incentive than that? Try Scottish Country Dancing. It’s aerobic, good for the body and mind…and very social.
The Delftians

We are a group of expats based in Delft and we regularly meet for mid-week drinks in Delft, and the occasional pub quiz, kinderboerderij visit, canal tour, etc. Everybody is welcome, as long as you live in The Netherlands, are an expat and are comfortable in English. Email us with your first name, city of residence in the Netherlands, nationality, and how you heard from us.
The Playgroup

We are a mixed group of mothers, fathers or nannies that meet weekly with our children. This allows our children to interact and develop early social skills. As for us, we’re drinking tea and having a fun social morning. This group is mainly for children less than 12 months of age. Formerly Mothers and Others.
Writers' Circle

You do not need to be an aspiring J.K. Rowling, just someone who enjoys writing and who would like the opportunity to be criticised, (in the nicest possible sense), by their literary peers. The idea is to meet informally, once a month at each other’s homes, with some light refreshments, where we present our work to each other for comments. All forms of writing are welcome; poetry, novels, fantasy, sci-fi, plays, short stories.
